This winter marks my ninth year as an entrepreneur. Nine years of experimenting, growing, learning, and evolving with each new idea and business I’ve launched. One thing has stayed constant—my passion for learning and my commitment to sharing the lessons I gather along the way. Today, I’m beyond excited to share what I’ve learned from Whitney Wolfe Herd’s approach to business. Whitney, the founder of Bumble (you know, the dating app where women actually get to make the first move!), has completely rewritten the rules of entrepreneurship. Bumble started as a way for women to feel empowered and safe in dating, but it’s evolved into so much more—a platform that fosters connections in friendship and business, too. Her ability to turn frustration into innovation is so inspiring.
And now, I want to walk you through the eight essential rules from Whitney’s masterclass that can help you unlock your next level of success. Whether you’re just starting out or in the thick of your entrepreneurial journey, these principles will guide you toward creating a business and life that align with your deepest purpose. Trust me, you’re going to want to save these!

Every great business starts with a spark—a frustration, a pain point, or something you’re passionate about changing. For Whitney, it was the frustration with how women were treated in dating apps. She saw that women weren’t always safe and often faced harassment. This deeply bothered her, and she knew she had to solve it. That’s how Bumble was born—an app where women make the first move, giving them more control over their online dating experience and making it safer.
How can you apply this?
Think about the problems that frustrate you daily. What are you so passionate about that you have to fix it? The ideas that will fuel your business come from these places. The best part? If you’re feeling the frustration, there’s a strong chance other people are too. Let your frustration ignite a powerful idea that solves real problems and meets real needs.
Whitney talks about finding “white space”—those gaps in the market that nobody else is addressing. She saw that no dating app had empowered women to take the lead, and she built Bumble to fill that gap. This white space became her playground for creating something entirely new.
How can you apply this?
White space is where your unique idea meets an unmet need. Who are the people feeling the same frustration you are? What products, services, or solutions don’t exist for them? Dive deep into understanding your audience’s needs, frustrations, and desires. Build your business to serve them in a way no one else has thought to do yet.
For me, this white space is bringing my clients closer to their ideal customers with strategic, beautiful websites while empowering women to create careers and lives they absolutely love. I’m passionate about helping women not only succeed but thrive in their own businesses and careers. What’s your white space? Take a moment to reflect on the gap only you can fill.
Creating a brand is more than offering a product or service—it’s about telling a story. Whitney built Bumble around a very clear purpose: empowering women. This wasn’t just a catchy tagline; it was the heart of her business. The “why” behind her brand was what set her apart in a saturated market.
How can you apply this?
What’s the deeper purpose behind your business? Why do you exist beyond making money? What do you stand for? When you can clearly communicate your “why,” your customers will feel connected to your brand on a deeper level. They’ll want to support you because they believe in the same values you do. Start with your mission and build everything around that core purpose. Your “why” will be what makes people fall in love with your brand.
One of the most powerful lessons from Whitney’s journey is that you don’t need a massive marketing budget to make a big impact—you need creativity. In Bumble’s early days, the team didn’t have millions to spend on flashy marketing campaigns. Instead, they relied on grassroots, scrappy tactics like word-of-mouth and community building. It worked. They built a loyal community that spread the word for them.
How can you apply this?
You don’t need big dollars to make your brand viral—you need passion and creativity. Focus on connecting with your community. Leverage social media, influencers, or even your own personal network to get people excited about what you’re doing. Think outside the box and find grassroots ways to get people talking about your brand. Be resourceful and think: how can I use what I already have to make an impact?
In a world where everyone’s fighting for attention, the brands that succeed are the ones that aren’t afraid to make some noise. Whitney did this by creating intrigue around Bumble’s values, making people curious about her brand. She wasn’t afraid to speak up and make her brand stand out. She even used “controversy” in creative ways, like hanging flyers in college classrooms saying, “Don’t use Bumble here”—which, of course, got students intrigued enough to download it immediately.
How can you apply this?
Don’t be afraid to be loud about what you believe in. Your message needs to be heard, and if you’re too quiet, your audience won’t find you. It’s not about being boastful—it’s about making sure the right people can hear what you’re offering. Get bold, create attention-grabbing content, and stand up for what matters. When you find your voice, the right audience will follow.
I’ll be honest, this was a tough lesson for me. I used to think making noise was a bit too much—like it might come off as arrogant. But I’ve learned that if people can’t hear you, they can’t find you. And if you’re doing something meaningful, the right people need to hear you. So, let’s make some noise!
Leadership isn’t about copying others—it’s about finding your own way. Whitney never tried to mold herself into what a “traditional” tech CEO looks like. Instead, she embraced her unique style of leadership, and that authenticity became one of her greatest strengths.
How can you apply this?
Don’t force yourself to lead the way someone else would. Lean into who you are, your values, and your strengths. People will naturally follow you when you lead with authenticity. Take time to reflect on what kind of leader you want to be. Do you know what makes you stand out? That’s the secret sauce to becoming the kind of leader your team and your business need.
Whitney’s philosophy is that innovation is key to greatness. However, there’s a balance. To be great, you must innovate and push boundaries. But, to be good, you also need to listen to the people around you—whether they’re investors, mentors, or your community.
How can you apply this?
Trust your gut when it comes to innovation, but also be open to guidance. Yes, listen to your investors and advisors, but always ask yourself, How can I push this further? Sometimes, greatness comes from listening to your instincts, even when others don’t fully see the vision. The balance between innovation and wisdom is where magic happens.
Confidence is Whitney’s final rule—and it’s a big one. As entrepreneurs, we all face moments of doubt, but it’s how you push through those doubts that determines your success. Whitney was told many times that her ideas wouldn’t work, but she stayed committed and trusted her vision.
How can you apply this?
Confidence is something you build over time. Start by setting small, achievable goals and celebrate every win, no matter how small. Surround yourself with a support system of people who believe in you. The more you practice confidence, the more unstoppable you’ll feel. And remember, if you believe in your vision, others will too.
